Sainik Schools Society (SSS)
The Sainik Schools Society is an organization authorized and worked under the Ministry of Defence. The Chief Executive Body of the Sainik Schools Society Organisation is a Board of Governors functioning under the Chairmanship of the Defence Minister. There is an Executive Committee under the Chairmanship of Defence Secretary for exercising closer control and supervision over the affairs of Sainik Schools. The day-to-day work of the Society is managed by JS (Trg) & Hony Secretary who is assisted by Inspecting Officers, DS (Trg), Under Secretary, Sainik Schools Society (Sainik School Cell). The staff for the Sainik School Cell is provided by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The local administration of the school is looked after by a Local Board of Administration whose Chairman is the GoC-in-C of the concerned Command where the Sainik School is located.

Sainik School Cell and its Functions
Below mentioned are some functions of the Sainik School Cell under the Ministry of Defence.
- Work relating to Board of Governors of Sainik Schools Society (SSS).

History of Sainik Schools under Sainik Schools Society (SSS)
The idea of the Sainik School was first conceived by the former Defence Minister of India V. K. Krishna Menon in the year 1961. The Sainik Schools are basically a chain of schools managed by the Sainik Schools Society (SSS) under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Govt of India. MoD runs Sainik Schools with the help of respective state governments and provide annual funding. The main objective of Sainik Schools is to overcome the existing regional and class imbalance amongst the Officer cadre of the Indian Military and preparing boys physically, mentally, and academically for entry into the National Defence Academy.
Aim, Objective, Mission & Vision of Sainik Schools Society
- To remove the existing regional and class imbalance amongst the Officer cadre of the defence services
- To develop qualities of body, mind and character which will enable the young boys to become good and useful citizens
- To provide public school education to the doorstep of the common man
- To provide high-quality education irrespective of their parent’s income or class background
- To preparing boys physically, mentally, and academically for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA)
- To prepare the students to become officers in the Defence Services of the country
- All-round development of the students and focus on moulding their overall personality with emphasis on extracurricular activities

Affiliation of Sainik Schools
In the beginning, the Sainik Schools had followed the ISC system but later the system was changed to the CBSE pattern in 1972. Earlier the classes were organized from V to XI but after the introduction of the 10+2 system in 1978, they were reorganized from classes VI to XII.

Eligibility & Admission Process in Sainik Schools under Sainik Schools Society
Admissions to Sainik Schools is done through the All India Sainik School Entrance Exam (AISSEE). Every year, The National Testing Agency (NTA) conduct the AISSEE for Class VI and IX. Girl candidates are now eligible for admission to Class VI in all 33 Sainik Schools. Students who are between the age of 10-12 years (for Class VI) and 13-15 years (for Class IX) as of March 31 in the year admission are being sought are entitled to take the examination.
67% of the seats are reserved for candidates domiciled in the State/ UT where the Sainik School is located. 33% of the seats are reserved for candidates from the Other States and Union Territories(UT). Within each Category of Home State/ UT and Other States/ UT quota, 15% of seats are reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, 7.5% seats for Scheduled Tribe (ST), and 27% seats are for Other backward Classes belonging to the Non Creamy layer (OBC-NCL).
A written test will be conducted for students. Candidates who will be qualified in the written exam will be called for a medical test. The final result will be based on the overall performance of the students in both written and medical tests.

Sainik School Scholarship Schemes
The State Governments award scholarships to the students on a merit cum mean basis. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) also awards scholarships to the wards of Service Personnel including Ex-servicemen and provides central assistance to those students who are awarded State scholarships. The sharing of expenditure on fees/scholarships amongst Central Govt, State Govt and parents is decided by the BOG from time to time.
SCHOLARSHIP SCHEMES

Students studying in Sainik Schools are eligible for State Government scholarships based on parents income. Central Government also provides scholarship share at varying rates to those receiving State Government scholarships.

Children of serving defence personnel and ex-servicemen admitted on defence quota are granted scholarships by the Ministry of Defence.

Under a new scheme, all boys studying in Sainik Schools receive about Rs.14,000/- per year as a subsidy from the MoD.

In some schools where amounts of scholarship are liberal, boys are studying by paying a very nominal amount. Cases have been taken up with the State Govts to increase the quantum of scholarship and the income slabs wherever they are less.
